Today, former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio told ABC News that he will be “strongly considering” running for the U.S. Senate to replace Jeff Flake when he retires in 2018.
Arpaio is best known around the country for his strict immigration policies and tough treatment of Arizona prisoners during his tenure.
After being pardoned by President Trump in August of this year, Arpaio told news outlets that he wasn’t sure what the future held for him but that a run for office could be in the cards. Arpaio has always been a fierce ally of Trump.
“If I run, I’m running for him.”
During the interview with ABC News, Arpaio conceded that he has not been in contact with any political operatives in Washington, D.C. but that he has met with former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon in the past few weeks.
